Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire, called "Caesar", is elected Holy Roman Emperor on the death of his grandfather Maximilian in 1519. Charles I of Spain and V of Germany was known in his time as "THE Emperor" since no king ever managed to gather under his command such an immense empire. 

He retired to the Monastery of Yuste where he remained a year and a half in retreat, away from the cities and political life, and accompanied by the order of the Jerónimos who spiritually guided the monarch until his last days. On 21 September 1558 he died of malaria. The coffin of Carlos I is located in the Royal Crypt of the Monastery of El Escorial known as the Pantheon of the Kings.

It is one of the most spectacular swords in the history of Spain. It is engraved with the coat of arms of the Habsburgs and those of the Empire of Castile-Leon-Granada, Aragon-Sicily, Austria, Burgundy, Bravante, Flanders and Tyrol.

At the shields centre is a golden relief of the 11th century Spanish Hero of the Reconquista, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known as El Cid Campeador-Spanish for Champion. It depicts the hero knight riding on his steed in full armour. El Cid was a great war hero, a superior and extremely successful soldier of fortune, who apparently never lost a battle, and became noted for his heroism with his King, Alphonse VI, in the conquest of Toledo.

The barrel armour is a late Medieval Armour from Europe used between the 15th and 16th Centuries. The barrel armor was specially developed for fighting on foot. It is usually smooth or in folds (pleated skirt armor) and is attached to the lower breastplate. It protects the wearer up to about the knees.
