Themistocles 525 - 460 BC C. was an Athenian general and politician. Member of the new generation of politicians who gained prominence during the beginnings of Athenian democracy, along with his great rival Aristides. As a politician, Themistocles was close to the people, and enjoyed the support of the Athenian lower classes, which, in general, pitted him against the nobility. Elected archon in 493 BC. C., took a series of measures to increase the naval power of Athens, something that would become a recurrent throughout his political career. He fought in Marathon during the First Medical War, being one of the ten Athenian strategoi mentioned by Herodotus.
