  • Templar Transitional Helmet - 16 gauge

The Templar Helmet is a style of transitional helmet that dates from the 12th - 13th century. This was a period when the open-faced flat topped helmets gradually evolved into the more protective Great Helms of later periods. The addition of a full face visor afforded much more protection than the simple nasal bar of the previous centuries – at the cost of better vision and ventilation.

This helmet is constructed from 16 gauge steel and features an adjustable leather spider liner and buckled chin strap. 16 gauge steel construction is suitable for most re-enactment groups.

    Height: 31cm
    Width: 21cm
    Depth: 26cm
    Circumference: 64cm
    Weight: 2528g

  • Great Helm

The Great Helm evolved out of a need for greater protection for the head and neck and was first seen towards the end of the 12th century. It was a very popular style of helmet worn by knights and men-at-arms in most European armies and was also worn by knights of the crusading orders such as the Knights Templar. It offered superior protection to the open face nasal helmet of the previous century but restricted vision and could become hot and stuffy - especially on crusade.

Our Great Helm is constructed from 18 gauge lacquered steel and is great for display or as part of a costume. Does not come with a liner and not recommended for re-enactment.

  • Crusader Great Helm - 16 gauge - Brass

The Great Helm, which began to be seen on the battlefield as early as the 13th century on its earliest forms proved to be a winning design to be used almost for the next three centuries. It was most commonly worn over a chainmail coif or skull cap. It was usually built with 4 riveted pieces with flat top. • Great Helm of Richard Pembridge

Looking forward to portraying a fearsome medieval knight with this helm donned on top of your reliable armour? Our flat-top great helm has got you covered! The original of this helm belonged to Sir Richard Pembridge. It was created to be worn on top of a Bascinet or Cervelliere, which was common practice for knights during that era. However, our replica has been specifically designed to be worn directly on your head and features interior padding that provides protection from blows and ensures stability.

It is handmade from sturdy mild steel (18 gauge) and is hence, not ideal for real-life combat or reenactments. It is not a functional piece of equipment and makes an excellent choice for collectors, medieval enthusiasts, or your next ren-fair or medieval fair costume. The padded liner adds to its comfort. The closure includes a genuine leather strap and a small brass buckle.

    Inner Circumference: 72cm

All dimensions are approximate and may vary from piece to piece.
