Our Charlemagne Sword is a product of the world famous Art Gladius factory in the historic sword manufacturing city of Toledo, Spain.

It features a richly decorated hilt with an antiqued bronze finish and wire-bound grip. The blunt stainless steel blade features etched heraldic decoration and is suitable for display only.

This Charlemagne Sword is a copy of a sword in the Louvre that is traditionally attributed to being Charlemagne's personal sword. It is called “Joyeuse” (Joyous) and was carried at the coronation processions of the French kings from 1270 to 1824. The 11th century Song of Roland describes the sword: “Charlemagne was wearing his fine white coat of mail and his helmet with gold-studded stones; by his side hung Joyeuse, and never was there a sword to match it; its colour changed thirty times a day”.

Charlemagne, Carolus Magnus, Charles the Great, king of the Franks and emperor of Western Europe, was born in 742, and became an undisputed chief and one of the great centers of power in history, the Holy Roman Empire. Through his conquests abroad and his internal reforms, Charlemagne laid the foundations of what would become Western Europe in the Middle Ages.

Today, Charlemagne is regarded not only as the founder of the French and German monarchy, which he is named as Charles I, but also as the father of Europe.

The Christopher Columbus Sword is constructed in the world famous Art Gladius sword factory in Toledo, Spain. Toledo has a reputation for producing some of the finest swords in Europe and has been the centre of sword production for centuries.

It features the arms of Castile and León on the pommel. These heraldic devices also appear on Columbus’ own coat of arms. The famous explorer’s name is emblazoned across the antiqued brass guard, the words separated by a catholic cross. The Spanish steel blade is etched with heraldic designs.
