  • Roman Scutum Shield - 89cm x 45cm

The Roman Scutum (meaning shield) formed part of the standard equipment issued to the Roman Legionary. By the time of the invasion of Britain by Emperor Claudius in AD 43, this style of scutum (there have been other earlier designs) was becoming more widespread but was not yet the standard pattern. The Roman Scutum provided excellent protection against missile attacks, especially when used in the testudo (Latin for tortoise) formation. Although no complete Scuta have ever been found in the UK (wood decomposes easily), the metal fittings from some shields have survived - there are some particularly nice examples in the British Museum.

Our Roman Scutum Shield is a high-quality replica and is constructed from linen covered wood and hand painted like the originals. It features a brass boss in the centre and reinforcing strips around the edges. This Roman shield is a favourite amongst reenactors and is suitable for living history.

    Length: 89cm
    Width: 45cm
    Depth: 12cm
    Weight: 2900g

  • Roman Dagger - Silver

The Romans are known to have borrowed ideas on the weapons of their enemies. Initially, they used weapons of Etruscan and Greek-style or, when confronted with the Celts, adopted their equipment. To defeat the Carthaginians built a fleet based on the Carthaginian model. Once a weapon is adopted it was standard. The weapons changed over the history of Rome, although its equipment and its use were never individual. Almost all Roman swords and daggers were double-edged and could be used for both cutting and threading.

The pugio was a small dagger used by the ancient Roman soldiers possibly as an auxiliary weapon. Like other equipment of the Legionnaires, the dagger had a series of changes throughout the I century. Generally had a long blade and leaf-shaped, between 18 and 28 centimeters long and 5 centimeters or more across. It was ideal for threading; a good rush can pierce a chainmail weapon.

    Total length: 38cm
    Weight: 900g
    Blade: Stainless Steel
    Edge: Blunt
    ScabbardNone
