In the hands of a skilled knight or man-at-arms, battle axes could be wielded with devastating force. Indeed it was the favourite weapon of some of the greatest warriors in history – King Robert the Bruce being one of them.

The Francisca is a type of throwing axe associated with the early medieval Franks, used prominently between the 5th and 8th centuries. It was both a weapon of war and a symbol of Frankish identity. Because of its distinctive design and deadly effectiveness, the Francisca became an iconic weapon of the Franks, so much so that its name is linked etymologically to the people themselves.
