  • Miniature Musketeer Sword Letter Opener

During the course of the 16th century, the Conquistador Rapier slowly eclipsed the classic sword as a gentleman's weapon of choice. As part of this development thrusting techniques gradually replaced cutting techniques, which meant that a shield was too bulky to be effective. Swordsmen who used rapiers often held daggers in their left hands for parrying their opponents' thrusts.
