Julius Caesar was one of Rome’s most successful generals. He played a pivotal role in the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire that followed. His victories in the Gallic Wars extended Rome’s territory to the English Channel and the Rhine and in 54BC he invaded Britain. He was ordered to step down from his military command after the conclusion of the Gallic Wars but instead he crossed the Rubicon with the 13^th Legion and entered Roman Italy under arms, where he quickly seized power and became Emperor.

Richard I was king of England from 1189-99. He was the third of five sons of King Henry II of England and Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was known as Richard Cœur de Lion or Richard the Lionheart because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade and scored considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin, although he failed to re-take Jerusalem. He remains one of the few kings of England who is remembered by his epithet, rather than a regnal number and is an enduring iconic figure both in England and in France.
